2:27 pm - half-year top ten list
My top ten songs new to me in 2009, as actually listened to by me, by play count on iTunes, for the first half of this year.

1. “Cello Song,” The Books featuring Jose Gonzalez, from the Dark Was The Night compilation. Oddly mesmerizing.

2. “Black Pear Tree,” Mountain Goats/Kaki King, from Black Pear Tree EP. Perhaps the purest distillation of why I love the Mountain Goats – the sense of shaking one’s fist at the sky as everything collapses. A beautiful, beautiful song, and frustratingly hard to find – I had to break my “now that I’m a lawyer I’m not going to illegally download music” rule, since it was on a tiny vinyl pressing.

3. “Pata Pata,” Miriam Makeba. I didn’t know much about her before she died, and I still don’t, but this song (from the 60s, I think) is ridiculously catchy.

4. “Station Approach,” Elbow. Why hadn’t I heard of Elbow before 2009? Big soft-loud alternapowerballads with a cute bearish lead singer who sounds a bit like the guy from Blue Nile and a bit like Peter Gabriel? Yes, please.

5. “Daylight,” Matt & Kim. Big stooped fun song. Something discovered off Subterranean.

6. “I’m Gonna Hate You When You Go,” Slow Runner. I can’t remember if [info]murphy recommended this band to me and [info]mattycub or if Matty recommended it to Owen and me. Their stuff hasn’t resonated as much as I thought it would, except this song, which is lovely.

7. “Just A Boy,” Angus and Julia Stone. Another Subterranean find.

8. “The Fear,” Lily Allen. I hated her first album, mostly. The second has moments of other brilliance, including this nice sideway dis of celebritard culture.

9. “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It),” by Beyonce. Yes, I’m gay, and this song is amazing, so shut up.

10. “Furr,” by Blitzen Trapper. Another Subterranean find. The rest of the album is pretty crushingly dull, but this song, and its amazingly cool video, make me very happy.
